One thing that is incredibly difficult for a service based business like salons to do is measure the effectiveness of their website. Sure, you can always ask new comers how they found you but let’s be honest — it’s not realistic to expect your receptionist or each stylist to ask that question. So how do you do it? You can use one of two products: or VoicePhonebooth Free.
Google Voice is a great product but the superiority of Phonebooth Free is obvious once you dive in so that’s what I’m going to talk about. Creating a unique phone number for your website is incredibly advantageous. The two great things about Google Voice are that when someone calls in you can force it such that your Google Voice number pops up in the caller ID and I’m sure it has great analytics as Google always does. That said, it’s by invite only. I haven’t even received an invite yet because the user base is still incredibly small.
Phonebooth Free on the other hand, you can sign up for it and they will email you when numbers become available and then it’s a first come first serve basis. Phonebooth keeps a log of calls coming in and you can even set up your own extensions and answering system. While the answering system isn’t going to be too advantageous for a salon, being able to track who’s calling into the salon via Phonebooth will tell you how effective your website really is. Furthermore, you can measure conversion rates by comparing your phone log to your books to see how well your receptionist is at selling potential new comers. What if you website is effective and it’s your receptionist that is doing a terrible job? By measuring the conversion rate of call-ins you’ll be able to see where the shortfalls are and adapt.
Furthermore, if you use your Phonebooth Free voicemail you will get transcripts of your messages emailed to you. For someone like me who does everything online and little on the phone, this was HUGE!

Just remember, it’s first come first serve when new numbers are available so once you get that email drop everything and get online to get a number in your area code. My Phonebooth Free number is 515.344.3918and I waited a month to get my hands on it (mine is set to go straight to voice mail so I’ll just be alerted when someone calls and leaves a message).
